The Three R's

This week for the science co-op, we talked about recycling.

The kids started learning about what it means to recycle, what you can recycle and coloring pictures.

Then they blended up some used paper and even added some blue dye and glitter.

They flatten the blended paper onto screens and pressed out the water.

And when it was dry they each had their own piece of sparkly blue homemade recycled paper.  I assumed they would be very excited to color or do something with the paper they made, but they actually don't want to do anything with it other than keep it because the don't want to ruin their special paper.

To go along with Tuesdays activity, for the Friday field trip we visited a recycling center.

The kids got to see what sort of things can be recycled and see if anyone had put non recyclable items in the recycle bins.

They went over what sort of things can and cannot be recycled and how how you should recycle different types of materials.  The recycling center we went to is on base and their goal is to raise 1 million dollars this year from recycling items such as aluminum cans, electronics and ink/toner cartridges.  They plan to put the money into on base community projects such as planting trees and improving the water park.

And when they finished looking around they all got recycle hero posters, shoe laces make from old soda bottles and a scent pencil made from recycled newspaper.

Afterward we all went to a nearby park where they pick up a little trash, played and even got to do some miniature golf.

What an interesting lesson and field trip. It is really amazing what you can make out of recycled stuff. Was that Mararma that the girl behind you was holding?
